Why Teacher Smackdown?
Why the hell not?
Thank god for most teachers. They’re passionate, hard working, kind, smart, decent, and love your kids almost as much as you do. They’ve taught, inspired, and kept many kids out of trouble. For most of us, it’s a teacher who got us where we are today.
But that’s not what this blog is about.
Doing my research for writing at Parents Behaving Badly, I began to realize there are a lot of naughty, misbehaving, lecherous, and just plain bad teachers out there. As a former board member of a charter school, I know they’re everywhere. Your child is at risk, no matter whether they go to a public and or private school in a “good” or “poor” school district. And not just schools, but preschools, daycare centers, YMCAs, Sunday schools, Hebrew schools, Scouts, martial arts schools, recreation centers, and gymnastic schools, too.
It’s your job as a parent to be on the alert. Talk to your kids, their friends, school administrators, teachers, and other parents. And dammit, get involved. Join the PTA or PTO, volunteer at school, and go to meetings. Find out if you can drop by the school and observe in the classroom. Support child abuse prevention programs in your school district and demand that they are taught. Help in the lunchroom or volunteer in the library. Hang out. The more eyes parents have out there, the quicker these bad teachers will be caught.
Ladies and gentlemen, let’s start the Teacher Smackdown.
