Update: Teacher Christy Brown Gets Probation Instead of Jail Time for Having Sex with Student
UPDATE: to High School Teacher Christy Anne Brown Arrested for Having Sex with Student
In Utah, Christy Brown, 33, a former teacher at Cyprus High School, was convicted of having sex with a 17-year-old boy who was one of her English students. Brown pleaded guilty in August to three felony counts of forcible sexual abuse. She could have gotten up to 15 years in prison for each count. Instead, Brown was sentenced to probation instead of jail.
Brown gets a whopping three years of probation, a $1,850 fine, and sex-offender treatment. The judge also order her not have any unsupervised contact with children under age 16 for the first year of her probation, and permitted Brown to send a card apologizing to the victim and his family.
The boy’s dad wrote to the judge and told him that jail time for Brown would not help his son, who feels responsible for what happened between him and Brown. The boy’s father said he also took pity on the teacher because of her low self-esteem. Oh, please.
Honestly, what are parents teaching their kids in Utah? To feel sorry for sex offenders and to blame the victim? Give me a break!
The judge said Brown had already suffered the loss of her career, and he was unsure what jail time would accomplish, too. How about setting an example in her community that it’s not o.k. to have sex with underage boys who happen to be your students? Duh! He’s also letting her serve her probation in Texas where she now lives (and where she moved to get a new teaching job). Geez, why not send her some Starbucks and Blockbuster gift cards while they’re at it, too?
Well at least the prosecutor in the case argued Brown should serve 120 days in jail. He was troubled that Brown looked at herself as a victim. She blamed the boy into pressuring her into having sex.
Uh, you’re an adult and the boy’s teacher, and you should know better?
Also, the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission revoked Brown’s teaching license. They said that school officials in Texas would have been notified of that action as well. Well, that’s good, but still this whole case is just one big cluster fuck.
