Should the AP Show Clips from the Sandridge Elementary School Principal-Teacher Sex Tape?

by Anne-Marie Nichols

As I reported earlier this week, principal Leroy Coleman and teacher Janet Lofton were caught on tape having sex in Coleman’s Sanridge Elementary School office. Teacher’s aide Anjayla Reed was also caught on tape having sex with her boss. The video tape was made illegally by person(s) unknown, and the AP is showing clips from it.

Blogger Jay Allen, The Zero Boss, is refusing to show clips from the tapes on his blog because they were obtained illegally. He writes, “even if they aren’t illegal, publishing them is in pisspoor taste.

I respect Jay alot. (Full disclosure: I briefly worked for him at Parent’s Behaving Badly when he owned the site.) I understand where he’s coming from when it comes to the parents being so shocked about the affairs. Oh please, after all the kids knew their principal was messing around and so did some members of the school board.

Yet obviously I don’t have the same qualms about publishing photo stills from the tapes. Yes, they were obtained illegally, but I’m not sure if it’s unethical to publish something that has been distributed to the public and is being used as evidence in a crime investigation. Gosh, if I can’t trust the ethics of the AP, I’m not sure who to trust.

Unlike Jay, however, I DO believe it is in pisspoor taste to do the nasty with your boss in the workplace no matter where you work be it a law office, a restaurant, or an elementary school. Like Tony Soprano, I believe you don’t shit where you eat. It screws up the work environment. People wonder if you deserved that raise or did you only get it because you were screwing the boss. It creates all kind of sexual harassment and stalking situations, too.

Heck, if you need a little extra outside of your marriage, get it anonymously on Craigslist or from a trained sex worker. After all, coworkers - and spouses - usually find out about workplace affairs. And in the case of Principal Coleman, the rest of the world found out, too.
