Teacher Kelsey Peterson Caught in Mexico After Kidnapping 13-Year-Old Student

by

kelsey_peterson.jpgKelsey Peterson, a 25-year-old single mother and sixth grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School in Nebraska was having a sexual relationship with her former 13-year-old student. According to the boy’s family, the relationship began in 2006 when he was 12-years-old.

A police investigation found affectionate emails and love letters between the two on her school laptop computer. Now Peterson is now facing charges of kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor for kidnapping the boy after leaving Nebraska with him and taking the child to Mexico. If she is found guilty of the federal crime of taking a minor across state lines and over the U.S. border for the purpose of having sex with him, Peterson could get 10 years in prison.

The teacher and the boy left Nebraska on October 25. (The day before they vanished, Preston was put on administrative leave by school officials.) They were spotted in Denver at a convenience store the next day. The FBI believe the two crossed the Mexican border on October 30. (The license plate of the white Pontiac they were traveling in was captured by a camera when she crossed the border.) Peterson was finally captured in Mexicali, Mexico last night thanks to efforts of the FBI and the Mexican police. (The boy, whose family is from Mexico, is in protective custody.)

While the school district didn’t notice anything going on between Peterson and her student, the boy’s family knew what was going on and tried to end the relationship. They blamed the relatioship for his acting out, uncontrollable behavior, and failing grades. Finally, when his conduct was so bad that a judge sent him to a home for troubled boys, the boy’s family went to the police with their concerns.

Stay tuned, I’m sure there will be more stories in the next few days and weeks since it has gotten lots of press attention. In fact, it is much more high profile than a similar case, Teacher Jennifer Leigh Rice Charged with Kidnapping and Raping 10-Year-Old Boy.
