Substitute Teacher Robert Ashley Extradited for Sexual Assault on a Child

by Anne-Marie Nichols

Robert_Ashley.jpgSubstitute Robert Ashley, 63, will be extradited from Montrose, Colorado to New Mexico for sexual assault on a child. An informant tipped off authorities that Ashley was staying at a Montrose hotel. Deputies took him into custody after an hour long surveillance.

Ashley is accused of hiding a video camera in a backpack to shoot upskirt pictures of young female students. Seems that staff at Atrisco Elementary found the video camera inside a backpack in the teacher’s lounge. The principal, an educational assistant and another teacher viewed the video, and called school district police. The next day a school counselor called the sheriff’s department (Kudos to school officials for acting quickly!)

Ashley told sheriff deputies that he’s a pedophile. He admitted to filming children at a playground near his apartment and at baseball games. He said he likes girls between the ages of eight and nine. Ashley also admitted that he’s especially attracted to young girls’ feet.

Ick, ick, ick.

How does a man like this get a job teaching kids? Seems Ashley had passed several background checks done by the school district. He also spent three years as a special education teacher but left in 2001. He started substituting at elementary schools in 2005.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about more charges after authorities go through Ashley’s home and interview kids at the various schools he worked at in New Mexico, California, Nevada, and Colorado.

Thanks to “Very Concerned Parent” for the tip.
