Shipley’s Choice Elementary Principal Orders Strip Search for Ticks, Gets the Smackdown from the School Board
The Ann Arundel County, Maryland school board has put the smackdown on the principal of Shipley’s Choice Elementary after she forced students to undergo a strip search for ticks. The school board is investigating allegations of child abuse, and has transferred the principal to their central office.
School leaders say the third grade class took an overnight trip to an outdoor learning center. During the trip students were forced to strip while they were searched for ticks that may carry lyme disease.
Weird thing was that that the principal wasn’t present during the strip searches and wasn’t even on the field trip. She just ordered the teachers to stip the kids to check for tick bites.
Duh.
Some parents said they did not think the strip search was needed as long as teachers told students how to check for ticks. However, some parents thought a strip search was okay since Lyme disease and tick bites are a big issue in Maryland.
Other parents felt that the school system should have a policy to address the issue, like a permission slip giving the o.k. for a teacher or nurse to check for ticks.
I don’t know who’s more hysterical, the ones screaming, “Oh my god, LYME DISEASE!” or “Oh my god, someone checked my nekkid kid for ticks!” Here’s what the principal should have done:
1) Ask parents if it’s o.k. to search their kids to check for ticks in places a bathing suit covers.
2) Show the kids how to check themselves.
3) Make sure parents know to check for tick bites after their student comes home from a field trip or outdoor hike.
Let’s show some common sense people!
