Girls Basketball Coach Sarah Boustila Verbally Abuses and Bullies Team
In Arizona, a group of parents say Sarah Boustila, Arcadia High School’s girls basketball team coach has bullied and verbally abused her players for two years. They told the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board that school administrators didn’t do enough to address complaints about Coach Boustil, and have asked that her coaching contract not be renewed.
Boustila is a math teacher at Arcadia High School and has been coaching the girls basketball team since 2005. Parents said they started noticing issues right away when players told their their parents that Boustila used curse words and verbally put down the team after a loss.
When parents asked her not to use offensive language, Boustila denied her actions. The problems continued and the coach told her players not to tell their parents about the verbal abuse and bullying.
The team was encouraged to openly discuss their concerns in a meeting with Boustila and an assistant principal. Two of the girls spoke up for the rest of the team, and when tryouts came around the next school year, they were cut from the team. Retaliation?
This is a hard one to call. Until there is good proof, for example a video tape of the coach cursing at the kids or several non-parerent adult witnesses to the abuse, it’s a impossible to determine if the coach went overboard. Some parents really have a problem with anyone disciplining their precious angels, and overreact.
Yet there seems to be some basis to the complaints if a meeting was facilitated between the coach and the girls to address the issue. It’s frustrating when a school administration can’t or won’t get rid of a bad teacher.
