First Grade Teacher Sharon Duerring Comes to School Drunk
First grade teacher Sharon Duerring, 49, was removed from her classroom when someone reported to school officials that she was acting intoxicated. Duerring taught at Cooks Corners Elementary in Valparaiso, Indiana.
The reports don’t say if it was a teacher, student or parent that told them that Duerring was drunk. Let’s hope it wasn’t the kids, then again I’m not sure most kids that age would know she was drunk - maybe just “acting funny.”
School officials called in police to deal with her. A breathalyzer test showed Deurring had a blood alcohol level of 0.20 - twice the legal limit to drive a vehicle in Indiana. Since it was early in the morning - she was arrested at 10:30 a.m. - you have to assume that she drove to school drunk or had been drinking in her classroom before school started for the day. What a way to start the day - geez!
When she was arrested she had two beers in her purse. She was charged with public intoxication and taken in handcuffs to the county jail.
Also, when she was removed from the school, her keys were confiscated, and she was warned not to return. Deurring had been a teacher for 25 years.
If the quote from parent Michelle Hickman are any indication, parents like Duerring, thought she was a good teacher, and feel she’s hit rock bottom with an addiction problem. It’s very sad that she has to end a long teaching career on such a horrible note. I hope she’s able to get help and redeem herself and her reputation.
However, I’m glad that school authorities handled the problem quickly, and got her out of there before she hurt anyone. Can you imagine what would have happened if she drove into the parking lot drunk and hit a kid?
