Eric McLean Appears on Dateline, Says He’s Sorry for Killing Wife’s Student Lover
Eric Mclean’s lawyer got him on TV again, this time on NBC’s Dateline. (The first time was on The Today Show.) The program featured an interview with Eric, and interviews with friends and relatives of the McLeans and the victim, Sean Powell. (Watch the video here.)
His estranged wife, Erin McLean, wasn’t interviewed by NBC. Her attorney defended her, saying she was in a loveless marriage with a troubled man. (So the solution is having an affair with your teenage student and trying to kill yourself? Getting a divorce attorney never crossed your mind?)
Eric said he was shocked by how fast his marriage fell apart after his wife was accused of having an affair with her 18-year-old student. He said he thinks about Sean a lot and regrets killing him. (Click here for the transcript.)
Tim Uehlinger, a Dateline senior producer, said it was one of the most compelling and emotional interviews he had ever witnessed.
Sean’s mother was contacted by 10News in Knoxville, TN about the Dateline story. She said:
…Eric shot Sean with a high-powered rifle with a seven pound trigger without any words or confrontation. Was it with intent, malice, and in cold-blood? We believe yes…
…No matter how you spin this - everyone has lost and Eric should take responsible for his actions…
I agree with Sean’s mom. Eric could have been a man - not a coward with a gun - and moved himself and the kids out, and dealt with Erin through a divorce lawyer. Instead he killed a young man, and ruined his family and theirs.
