Teacher Smackdown

In North Carolina, Charles Hadley, 29, a Southwest Guilford High School teacher, was arrested for soliciting sex from a teenager in an online chat room. The formal charges are “soliciting a child by computer.”

The investigation started this summer when detectives suspected Hadley of having inappropriate conversations online. Investigators stepped in and posed as a 15-year-old girl. Hadley fell for the bait hook, line and sinker. General conversation quickly lead to sexual questions. Then Hadley said he was going to try to meet with the teenager, but backed out of the meeting. Even though the visit never took place, the chats gave authorities enough evidence to arrest and charge Hadley.

In North Carolina, second grade teacher Amy Snead, 36, was one of six people arrested in “Operation Pill Crusher” a countywide sting agaist methamphetamine production.

Snead is a teacher at Polenta Elementary School and is now suspended. She had worked in the school district for 14 years - judging from her age, from the time she left college.

In Kernersville, North Carolina, Melvin Fair, 55, was charged with four counts of indecent liberties involving two girls, both students at Southeast Middle School. The recent allegation involves a 14-year-old girl. The other allegation - indecent liberties with a 12-year-old girl - goes back to 1999.

Fair is a PE teacher and athletic director. He has been with the school since 1998 and working in the school district since 1995. The allegations state that Fair knew the girls from gym classes and that the incidents happened when he was alone with the student.

Between NBC Dateline’s To Catch a Predator show and what police are doing all over the U.S. to crack down on internet sex predators, I’m surprised that anyone is trying to hookup with kids online. Still that didn’t stop Scott Libert Hovey, 26, a mathematics teacher at Southeast Raleigh High School in North Carolina.

Hovey was charged with internet solicitation - trying to arrange a meeting with a teenage girl for sex. Hovey has been suspended with pay from his job pending the outcome of his case.

Hovey was caught by undercover detectives as part of an ongoing Internet solicitation investigation. Police are asking that anyone with information related to the case, including previous encounters with minors over the Internet, to call (336) 373-2255 or CrimeStoppers at (336) 373-1000.

Scott Libert Hovey, internet solicitation, Southeast Raleigh High School, online sex predators, internet sex predators

In Haw River, NC, David Haase, a teacher assistant Haw River Elementary School was arrested for taking indecent liberties with a student. Haase has no prior criminal record and he passed the district’s pre-hiring screening.

School officials discovered the assault after third-grade students attended an assembly presented by Family Abuse Services of Alamance County. The presentation was to raise awareness in children about neglect and abuse. The kids were taught about what is a good touch, what is appropriate, and what kind of secrets are worth keeping. After the assembly and puppet show, the children were asked to write short essays. From those essays, teachers were alerted to a problem with Haase and called police.

Bravo to a school district that teaches their kids about sexual abuse and to teachers who carefully read the essays and reported Haase. That’s the way the system’s supposed to work, folks!
