Teacher Joseph Bradfield Arrested for Bringing Loaded Handgun on School Property

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

school_gun.jpgIn Sibley, Iowa, English teacher Joseph Bradfield, 45, was arrested by the sheriff for bringing a loaded handgun on to school property. A student at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School tipped them off about the loaded 44 caliber handgun on the passenger side of Joseph Bradfield’s car in the school’s parking lot.

Leave a loaded gun on the seat in your car in full view of anyone passing by? How stupid! Bradfield, of all people, should have known better.

He assists with hunting safety courses. He is also a captain in the Civil Air Patrol with the Worthington Composite Squadron. He is a ground team leader, a mission pilot, deputy commander of the cadet program, and the moral leadership officer. If anyone should know about responsible gun ownership, he should. (He probably forgot to take his “smart pill” that day. Geez.)

The sheriff said that Bradfield had a permit to carry a concealed weapon. They also do not believe anybody at the school was in danger. However, students, faculty and parents are upset by the incident because of recent school shootings across the U.S. and the fact that at 14-year-old Everly, Iowa teenager was arrested on terrorism charges for bringing a gun to school.

Parents are especially ticked off that took three weeks to investigate and arrest him. In the meanwhile, Bradfield was allowed to keep teaching - and the parents were kept in the dark about the incident. Bradfield was finally suspend him from his job with pay after he was arrested.

Bradfield faces up to five years in prison and a $7,500 fine if found guilty. The sheriff has revoked Bradfield’s permit for carrying a concealed weapon.

This is not the first time at Teacher Smackdown that we’ve heard about a teacher getting arrested for bringing a gun to school. See our story: Teacher Andrew Martin Arrested for Having a Concealed Firearm on School Grounds.

Teacher Mark Haburn Faces Sex Abuse Charges

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

mark_haburn.jpgIn Des Moines, Iowa, sixth-grade teacher Mark Haburn was arrested and charged with third-degree sexual abuse. His victim was a 14-year-old girl. The abuse did not take place at Nevada Middle School where Haburn teaches.

Back in 2005, Haburn was charged with assaulting an underage female student. A jury found him not guilty, and Haburn did not lose his job. However, the student’s family filed a civil lawsuit against Haburn and the school district.

Police said they first heard of about the allegations against Haburn in July and were conducting an investigation before they arrested him.

Sounds like this guy is showing a pattern of assault against young females. I hope the district concludes this as well and fires the bastard.

And if you don’t think these relationships are damaging, just read what the victim and her mother told Padilla in court:
