Teacher Smackdown

In Washington state, Richland High School music teacher Allen Eve, 58, was arrested on three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor in the first degree, communication with a minor for immoral purposes, and assault in the fourth degree with sexual motivation.

Seems that he was using the band room as his personal Playboy Mansion to have sex or sexually harass three teenage girls.

Here at Teacher Smackdown, I like finding stories about teachers stealing. It certainly beats teachers having affairs with their teenage students, or feeling up kindergarteners…sigh.

In Cumberland, Maryland, Carmen Belen Harden, 35, was charged with embezzlement and theft. She was arrested at her home on a warrant and posted a $20,000 bond later that day.

The investigation began in June when the county board of education notified the Cumberland Police Department that a teacher was embezzling funds.

In Santa Barbara, California, El Camino Elementary School teacher Martin Corral, 36, was arrested for committing a lewd act on a child. His victim was an 11-year-old boy.

The molestation did not take place at school, but at Corral’s home. Corral had befriended the boy’s family and had their consent to bring the boy home.

Corral taught academically at-risk students and was very popular. Parents and students are shocked and saddened by his arrest and know Corral as a dedicated teacher and an active member of the community.

Ventura Police believe there might be more victims out in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, and ask that you call detectives at 805-339-4465 if you have any information.

Coral has posted $50,000 bail.

With Labor Day comes the fact that our kids are all back in school. Here’s to a safe and productive 2007/8 school year for us and our kids.

Remember to talk to your kids about good touch/bad touch, how to be safe from bullies and abusive adults, and to foster a love of learning by reading with your child and participating in their school lives.

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful holiday with family and friends.

If you have a second, go over to the ushistory.org website and read the text from the Declaration of Independence. Pretty serious stuff.

So let’s celebrate our independence from abusive teachers, principals that ignore problems, and school districts that try to push it all under the rug.

Instead, let’s celebrate those wonderful teachers and administrators that taught us to love learning and appreciate history and our wonderful country.

After seeing stories of teachers bragging on Facebook that they had sex with their students, MySpace’s announcement yesterday was good to hear. MySpace said that they will be working with state attorney generals who request the identities of MySpace members who are known child sex offenders.

Since parole conditions for sex offenders ordinarily say that they cannot be in contact with children, it’s important that predators are removed off MySpace and similar social networking sites that attract kids.

Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund

April 16, 2007, will be remembered as one of the darkest days in the history of the Virginia Tech community and the world beyond.

This is one busy principal. In Illinois, Sandridge Elementary School Principal Leroy Coleman and science teacher Janet Lofton were caught on tape having sex in Coleman’s school office. Teacher’s aide Anjayla Reed also appeared on video hugging and touching the principal. All three have resigned from their jobs.

The crazy thing about this? There wasn’t a security camera in the principal’s office, so someone got access to and placed a camera in the principal’s office. Then they made a DVD of the sexually explicit material, and mailed it out to parents, teachers, and local newspapers in an effort to manipulate an upcoming school board election.

I’ve found numerous articles looking at the epidemic of teacher-student, especially female teacher-teenage boy, sexual relationships. If you’re a parent of a teenager, you should read these and then have a heart-to-heart talk with your son or daughter and let them know that having a crush on a teacher is normal, but having sex with them isn’t.

Seems that the New York City area has been plagued with “hot for teacher” crimes. One case happened in the Bronx where Emily Streb, 23, was charged with third-degree rape for having sex with a 16-year-old, special ed student with psychiatric problems. Streb was his music teacher. The two had sex at the teacher’s Bronx home as well as at the teenager’s home early in the morning before school. (His mother wasn’t home and is being investigated by child protective services for neglect.)

At Brighton Charter High School, all hell has been breaking loose. Teachers have been boozing it up - and molesting - students.

Former teacher Carrie McCandless, 29, was arrested last year and is facing felony charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The Brighton Charter High School teacher - and wife of the principal - provided alcohol to students and engaged one of them in a sexual relationship during a late-October school field trip to Estes Park.
